Our client, a discerning real estate investor, acquired an undeveloped lot in the Tarrytown neighborhood. She came to us with an assortment of inspirations, most of which pointed toward a contemporary farmhouse – a modern interpretation of traditional forms with a clean and simple architectural palette of painted siding, standing seam metal roofs, and lofty interior spaces with ship lap walls.
The challenge was twofold. First, organizing the client’s robust program among several mature trees, on an already tight urban lot, required design ingenuity coupled with creative engineering. Second, with little separation from neighboring properties, privacy was a concern. The solution was to turn the house inward, wrapping the primary living spaces around a private pool court. The result is a dynamic take on an American archetype.
